Free Flow Dance Theatre Company to perform first show in the Battlefords

May 18, 2019 | 9:50 AM

Saskatoon’s Free Flow Dance Theatre Company is coming to the Battlefords to perform a two-night run of The Atlas Figment at the Battlefords Community Playhouse June 28 and 29.

An atmospheric contemporary work by Artistic Director Jackie Latendresse, the production is quite literally a dream come to life for the director.

“I would describe it as a surrealist performance,” Latendresse said. “It was actually inspired by a dream that I had, and I like to think of it as a dance version of a Salvador Dali painting. It is a little bit surrealist, it’s edgy, it’s contemporary dance and it’s something the Battlefords has likely never seen before.”

Adding a bit of local flavor to the event is Battlefords’ composer Cliff Burns, who developed an original score for the show.

Burns’ connection to the community is something Latendresse credits as a contributing factor to the company making the trip to perform their first full show in the Battlefords.

“Cliff had mentioned that we should come to Battleford, which was really our instigation,” she said. Latenderesse added that it didn’t take long to realize the group had made the right choice in taking him up on the offer.

“They made us feel very, very welcome,” Latendresse continued. “The Community Playhouse People have just been so amazing, they’re very excited to have us as guests and they’ve offered a lot of help and services to enable our tour there. Having those connections in the local community is what really made us excited to go there.”

With a running time of just under an hour, the show will feature an opening performance by Brazilian choreographer Newton Morales. Morales will be presenting an original piece of his prior to The Atlas Figment.

The show will also include a brief intermission between the two works. Following the production, the cast will also host a short ‘talk-back’ period, allowing those in attendance to ask the cast or director any questions or comments they may have.

In addition to the performances, the Free Flow Dance Theatre Company will also be hosting a couple of workshops during the day June 29 for dancers in the community.

Available to any local dancers who wish to attend, the contemporary dance workshop will begin at 1 p.m. with a contemporary Brazilian Fusion class at 3:15 p.m. Both will take place at the Playhouse as well, with payment options available upon drop-in.

Doors open for the evening performances June 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. with the show beginning at 8 p.m.
