Battlefords’ MS Walk just around the corner

The Saskatchewan Blue Cross is hosting its annual MS walk May 26.

Meeting at Lawrence Elementary School in North Battleford, check-in time for the walk will open at 12 p.m. with the walk itself beginning at 1 p.m.

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 77,000 Canadians living with the debilitating disease, according to MS Canada.

All funds raised at the MS Walk will be donated toward both further research of the disease, as well as helping to empower those afflicted by funding local programs and services for people living with MS.

The walk on the 26^th with commence with a brief program, featuring speakers from the Saskatchewan Blue Cross and Battlefords’ MLA, Herb Cox, as well as possible guest speakers.

About 50 people attended the walk last year, as the community raised about $13,000, exceeding the organization’s yearly goal of $11,000.

Kat Matlock, an MS Society of Canada – Saskatchewan Division employee who organizes the event in the Battlefords’, said the community support was great to see over the last number of years, as people from all walks of life join together to make a difference.

“MS is one of those diseases that has a wide-spread affect,” Matlock said. “[It affects] the entire family, friends and colleagues of the person who’s diagnosed, and really the whole community. It’s awesome to see that many people coming together all for a common goal, working together and fundraising, all while having a great time.”

Following the walk, pizza will be provided by Boston Pizza.

Those attending the MS Walk can register as a team or on an individual basis. Online registration is available here, or on event day at the check-in table.
