‘It matters what we do:’ Men take a stroll for Walk A Mile in Her Shoes

“It was really tough,” RCMP Const. Casper Read said, breathing a sigh of relief as he sat down to take off his red high heels after participating in Walk A Mile In Her Shoes.

Organized by the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC), the event was part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week.

The officer said he wanted to take part since “it just shows everybody that it matters what we do, everybody taking part in events.”

This was Trent Gatzke’s third year taking part. He said besides being a great cause, more awareness about the issue will bring more opportunity to make things better.

Gatzke said it gets a little less painful each year to take a stroll with his feet squeezed into high heeled pumps.

“I guess you develop a form, if you will,” he said with a laugh. “Each year it’s a little bit easier to walk.”

A total of $3,200 was raised from the event. All of the proceeds stay in the Battlefords to help support BASAC’s prevention education programming offered to children and youth in local schools.

Upwards of 30 people participated in the walk from the Blend Restaurant north on 100 St. and back.

“They really enjoyed it,” Heather O’Neill, BASAC chair of the board of directors said. “A lot of them are teams that have been here year after year. It’s something they look forward to doing.”

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is an international men’s march against rape, sexual assault and gender-based violence.
