National Police Week gives Battlefords RCMP a chance to get in community

May 10, 2019 | 2:00 PM

In celebration of National Police Week, the Battlefords RCMP will be holding a detachment BBQ on Wednesday.

National Police Week has been running for the past 49 years, and it gives the department a chance to get out in the community and speak to the locals that they police. The BBQ will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and will include cheese burgers, burgers and a water or pop for sale with all the proceeds going to the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt says these types of events give the public an opportunity to engage with them to change some of the residents perceptions of the officers.

“I encourage and welcome everyone to come,” he said. “Events like this are really important for us. It gives us an opportunity to connect with the community.”

Along with the BBQ, the Battlefords RCMP will also be holding events at schools around the Battlefords to educate and show the students what they do on a day-to-day basis. If students are interested in policing, this also gives them the opportunity to get up close and personal with the officers to ask questions, or just to get that one on one interaction.

National Police Week runs from May 12 to 18 this year, and the annual tradition is crucial for the Battlefords detachment, Woolfitt said.

“We participate in this event every year,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us as police officers and community members to get together and get to know one another.”
