Work begins on Second Ave. infrastructure project

May 8, 2019 | 9:15 AM

The Town of Battleford will start work on a big project this summer for sewer replacement upgrades at Second Avenue (between 30th and 35th Streets).

The project will be completed in phases, starting with the base work replacing underground pipe, as discussed at council’s meeting Monday.

As recommended by administration and an engineering consultant, council accepted the lowest of three bids to complete the base work on the project, received from Sanburn Construction Ltd. at $218,660, which with taxes and a buffer for contingency costs came in at $253,645 in total.

While the total is over the town’s budget of $244,000 for this part of the project, the cost for the entire project for the complete rehabilitation of the intersection is expected to be on budget, according to CAO John Enns-Wind’s report.

Mayor Ames Leslie said it will be good to see the project move ahead.

“It’s been a bone of contention for this council for the six years I’ve been on it, having Second Avenue complete,” he said. “It’s great to see both administration and council get it approved in this budget to get done.”

Leslie said residents can expect to see interruptions in their commute when the work commences so they will need to use an alternate course in the meantime.

“You may have to reroute down to First Avenue or Third Avenue to go along your day,” he said.

The curbs, gutter and paving work will be tendered now that the base work contract was awarded.

Enns-Wind reported the town expects the curbs, gutter and paving work part of the project will start in August.
