Town gives go ahead to improve industrial park drainage issues

Battleford will improve drainage in the industrial park area to reduce ongoing damage to the road and riverbank from overland flooding.

The work will involve installing storm sewers so excess water collected on the ground surface after a rain fall will flow underground through the storm grates instead, to prevent further erosion of the ground near the ravine and protect the road.

“This area has seen increasing erosion over the years,” CAO John Enns-Wind said in his report. “All the rain flow falls onto the Industrial Park, and it all comes down Fifth Avenue. So, there has been substantial erosion of the bank.”

Council approved administration’s recommendation to accept a bid from firm Sanburn Construction Ltd. which came in with the lowest of three offers, at $243,082 in total, for the first stage of the project.

The town allocated $263,000 for the work, so the bid received was under budget.

The project will start around May 21 and should be completed by the end of July.

Enns-Wind said a small channel has started to form at the corner of the road of Fifth Avenue and 13th Street that feeds into the ravine, so this project will help address the issue.

Councillor Doug Laing was supportive of the plan.

“It’s under budget, so we save a lot of money. If we don’t do something to the road, it starts to affect the infrastructure and pipes in that street,” he said. “This will be a small price to pay. It’s being proactive.”
