Prince Albert region ferries back in operation

Motorists in the area may once again take advantage of some water-crossing shortcuts.

Steve Shaheen, senior communications consultant with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure said the province’s ferries are now ready for spring use.

“All the ferries are now open,” Shaheen said. “There’s five different ferries in the Prince Albert region. There’s the Cecil, Weldon, Fenton, St. Laurent and Wingard ferries and they are all operational.”

Shaheen said ferries are an important link in the transportation chain for the province.

“Water, lakes and rivers present some transportation challenges across the various regions and that is solved by the 12 ferries and one barge located across the province,” he said.

Although only run once the ice comes off the river, the local ferries still see a significant amount of traffic. Around 20,000 vehicles use each the Cecil and Weldon Ferries every year.

Hours of operation and ferry shutdowns may vary from crossing to crossing, for up-to-date information, Shaheen encouraged everyone to use the Highway Hotline.
