Green Lake model competing to be cover girl for Maxim Canada

Hannah Anderson-Ross, a model from Green Lake, could soon be on the cover of Maxim Canada as the Métis model has made it into the 2019 Maxim Magazine Cover Girl Canada competition.

The Carpenter High School graduate moved to Saskatoon to study pre-law at the University of Saskatchewan, it was there that she also took a chance to follow her dreams of being a part of the fashion industry and becoming a model.

“I had a huge interest in fashion and makeup and I always had since I was younger and I just wanted to be involved in the fashion industry,” said Anderson-Ross.

She applied to an online recruitment for Numa Modelling, a modelling company based out of Calgary, and was accepted the night of her first interview.

Anderson-Ross found the competition through another model who she had worked with at a past fashion show.

“She had posted it on her social media and was advertising about it,” she recalled. “And trying to recruit other models and trying to inspire them to go for it. So I decided to apply from there.”

The competition separates models into over 90 different groups, the public then votes for their favourites in those specific groups. Winners of those groups will then move on to the next stage.

Winning the competition will give her career a boost, but Anderson-Ross is also using it to represent her home, culture and community.

“I would love to represent my culture. My community as Green Lake is a Métis community and Indigenous models, there’s not many of them in our fashion industry overall – internationally and in Canada.”

With so few Indigenous models in the competition, Anderson-Ross feels that representation of Métis and other Indigenous culture is important.

“There’s not many in the competition and no Indigenous model has ever been on the cover of Maxim.”

Anderson-Ross is currently in the group stages where she is up against 26 other models in her group.

“I am paying attention to the voting,” said Anderson-Ross with a laugh. “At first I wasn’t but you kind of have to at this point as there’s going to be many rounds. It’s going to be a long process.”

The voting for her group ends May 16. Anderson-Ross is currently in third place in her group and she says a large part of that has been because of the support from her friends and community.

“The support from the community has been enormous and I can’t be thankful enough,” she said. “From friends to family to the community overall. Through sharing it on social media and sharing it with their friends and family, I’ve gained just enormous support from everyone. And I’m truly just so happy and thankful that I’m able to receive that.”

The winner of the competition will not only have their face on the cover of Maxim but they will also receive $10,000. Anderson-Ross says she will be giving some of her winnings to a family member who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

“A family member, she has cancer and I would like to donate at least half the proceeds to her cause because it’s so important.”

The competition will go through several group stages where the public can vote for the models. The final stage of the competition will be held from June 14 to June 20.
