Terriers claim Anavet Cup with Game 5 win

The Battlefords North Stars saw their season draw to a close Thursday night in Game 5 of their Anavet Cup series with the Portage Terriers.

A 7-3 decision in favor of the Terriers, the contest clinched the Anavet Cup for the MJHL Champions after a hard-fought, and wildly thrilling, five-game series.

Terriers’ forward, Ocean Wiesblatt opened the scoring for the visitors Thursday, just 27 seconds into the first period.

Scoring his first of the series, and fifth point in the five games, the elder Wiesblatt’s tally marked the fourth time the Terriers’ kicked off the scoring parade in a game.

The contest remained 1-0 until just-passed the mid-way mark of the period, when 17-year-old Joey Moffatt scored his first of the series as well, to increase his team’s lead to 2-0. It was the third time the Stars’ had found themselves down two in the first.

Battling back, however, sophomore defenseman, Matthew Fletcher, who entered play coming off a two-point effort Wednesday (having scored a goal and a helper) got on the board again, cashing in on a shorthanded breakaway to cut his team’s defecit in half, at 2-1 Terriers.

A tremendous individual effort by Fletcher, with great finish to boot, the defenseman’s goal also served as the Battlefords’ second shorthanded goal in as many games.

The ruckus crowd at the Civic Centre would enjoy the euphoria for only but a minute, however, as just 21 seconds later, and still on the power play the Stars’ scored their shorty on, Ocean’s brother, Orca Wiesblatt got in on the scoring for the Terriers as well, notching his third of the series to reestablish Portage’s two-goal lead heading into the second.

In the middle frame, Orca Wiesblatt again added to his team’s advantage, scoring just 6:21 into the second, again, on a Portage power play.

After Jay Buchholz scored his first of the series on another Portage man-advantage to make it 5-1, the Stars did strike again in the period, with just under three minutes to go to the second intermission, courtesy of Quintin Loon-Stewardson, making it 5-2.

Loon-Stewardson’s second of the series, also served as his second in as many nights, giving the forward an astonishing 10 goals at the Civic Centre over the collective postseason.

Portage however, again managed to answer back with one of their own prior to the conclusion of 40 minutes, thanks to Kolton Schindle’s third.

In the third period, after Chase Brakel scored to make it 7-2 Terriers, Stars’ forward Brett Gammer did answer back with one final note of celebration for the hometown Battlefords’ crowd to enjoy, as the rookie picked up his second in just three games played of the series, from Austin Becker; 7-3 Terriers, the Final.

Stars’ goaltender Joel Grzybowski stopped 20 of 25 Portage shots on the night while Chad Duran, who came in part-way through the second in a temporary relief-effort, before Grzybowski ultimately returned in the third, made 11 saves on 13 shots.

Portage goalie Nathan Moore stopped 29/30 Stars’ shots in the victory, helping his team to the championship, along with the help of Ethan Peterson, who played three of the five series’ games.

Despite the loss, the North Stars’ are still SJHL league champions this season, in a campaign that can only be looked at as an overwhelming success.
