Celebrated pianist Knutson planning fundraiser concert as part of talented trio

Celebrated pianist Cole Knutson will be performing in a classical music concert next month with two other musicians – Jeanny Jung on violin and Zaide Masich on cello.

The local artists will play works by Schubert, Mozart and Haydn at the upcoming show. The first half of the concert will feature Knutson performing solo piano, and for the second part the trio will perform together.

Admission to the concert is by donation. Funds raised will benefit musical prodigy Knutson who has been accepted for a scholarship to study piano at a prestigious school in London, England this fall – the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

“People are welcome to come and listen,” Knutson said of the concert. “I’ll encourage people to consider making a donation. The concert is to show people what they would be directly supporting, and a good activity to get things kick-started for the summer.”

The young talent from North Battleford who has previously also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City has a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help cover his costs over the next year ahead while studying abroad.

The 22-year-old said he is grateful to everyone who has personally supported his cause and has already received about $8,000 in donations. Knutson has also been applying for grants to help his efforts as well.

“I’m really overwhelmed with the support and generosity,” he said of local residents’ kindness. “Lots of people have written to me who I don’t know at all. They are sending me good wishes, which has been absolutely wonderful.”

Knutson mentioned in the event the Brexit negotiations make it financially untenable for him to pursue his studies in London, England, he will still be able to study music with the same internationally recognized teacher in Austria as an alternate option.

The young trio’s concert will take place Sunday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph of Calasanctius Church in North Battleford.
