It went down to the wire, but in the end it was a win for reigning Women’s World Champion Silvana Tirinzoni over the North Battleford-based Robyn Silvernagle at the Humpty’s Champions Cup in Saskatoon.

A back and forth affair at Merlis Belcher Place ended in a successful draw for Alina Paetz, who throws skip rocks for Team Tirinznoi. The 4-3 win was tight, and Skip Robyn Silvernagle said when you go up against the best, it’s always going to be highly contested.

“It was close, it was a few shots here and there, and that’s what happens when you play the world champions,” she said. “It was really anyone’s game.”

Single’s in the second, fifth and seventh ends for Silvernagle pushed the game to the final frame. The game was the quarter-final matchup between the two rinks in the final Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.

Throughout the week, Silvernagle’s social media team asked fans to show up dressed in purple with their homemade signs to cheer the team on, and labelled them the SilverSquad.

For the foursome, the support from the crowd made the event all the more special.

“It was awesome,” she said. “To play in big, meaningful events it’s a lot of fun. You still learn a lot after a lot of teams finish their season. They’re either getting a new team or changing players, we’re still learning and building. I think that will take us ahead for next year.”

Moving into the 2019-20 season, this was breakthrough year of sorts from the foursome who curls out of Twin Rivers Curling Club.

“We’re just going to keep building and growing and learning. We’re no longer that first year team, and we can keep building and get to be that much better,” she said.

It was a whirlwind of a season for the rink. From taking bonspiels on the World Curling Tour to the first Grand Slam for the squad in North Battleford and qualifying for the playoffs. But the Silvernagle rink didn’t stop there. They broke through and won the Viterra Scotties in Humboldt after three years of heartbreaking defeats, they then went on to earn bronze at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

This tournament was the end to a season of many successes, and to do it in front of their #SilverSquad, made that much sweeter, Silvernagle said

“Their support means so much to us. We work so hard at it, it’s so great they’re as passionate as we are. They help us to keep getting better, and achieving more,” she said.
