Compensation approved for Aquatic Centre members due to partial closure

Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre members will now be able to receive some compensation while the facility is partially closed for pump repairs.

Council approved two compensation proposals available to members at its meeting Monday.

Members have the option of requesting a full hold be put on their memberships for the duration of the partial facility shutdown. If they want to access the Aquatic Centre during this period they would pay set discounted admission rates, equivalent to the Field House drop-in rates. An adult would see a $3.25/day discount, a senior $2/day off, or for a child aged six to 12 $1.25/day less than the regular rate, as an example.

As another option, those who wish to continue using their memberships can instead receive a pro-rated per day compensation credit on their account equal to the discounted rates.

“Council wanted to ensure we were finding a balance between being fair to those with memberships and fair to city taxpayers,” Mayor Ryan Bater said following the meeting. “I think we found a great balance. Administration has been working very hard on this, very quickly.”

The city will notify the public about the compensation plans available via its website, Facebook page, through phone messaging and directly at the Aquatic Centre admissions desk.

Leisure Services Director Cheryl DeNeire stated in her report a revised schedule is in place for the facility during the partial closure. While the lane pool is still open, when it is being used for swimming lessons, pool rentals, or swim club and synchronized swim club use it will be closed to the public. The hot tub and steam room remain open to the public, also based on the amended schedule.

DeNeire said traditionally April has been a strong revenue month for the facility, so unfortunately the city is anticipating a significant financial loss due to the partial shutdown.

The aquatic centre notified the public mid April the wave pool, lazy river and water slide were closed until further notice due to a mechanical failure while the pump system was being repaired. While it hasn’t been determined when the facility will be fully open again, the last time there was a break-down in 2016, there was a seven-week wait for parts to come in to fix the pump.
