Silvernagle ready for the spotlight at final Slam of the Season

Apr 23, 2019 | 1:00 PM

After six events that have spanned eight months and four provinces, the final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season is set for today.

The Humpty’s Champions Cup will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Saskatoon, and with that, the end to a strong season for the Twin River’s foursome of Robyn Silvernagle. Silvernagle starts her run tonight at 8 p.m. against Switzerland’s Elena Stern, and with this being another ‘home’ event for the team, it’s sure to bring out a raucous crowd at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

“You always want to end with a bang. Being at home, it will be extra special and lots of fun,” she said.

The tournament runs six days, and will have four guaranteed games for the North Battleford team. Along with the Stern opener, they will battle with Laura Walkers foursome, “Team Flaxey”, Anna Hasselborg and Jennifer Jones. Being the final event played of the season, there is a more relaxed expectation for the teams competing. On both the men’s and women’s sides, the Pinty’s Cup has been decided already, with Team Homan and Team Koe both taking home the championship this season.

Along with that, with the Mixed Doubles Championship going on, many foursomes will be playing with spares, or curlers they picked up for the final slam of the year. For Silvernagle though, this is about finishing on a high note going into the offseason, and giving their fans something to cheer about. She said that having the crowd behind them really helps the way they approach the game.

“We missed that in Toronto,” she said. “We loved it in North Battleford, we’ll definitely be feeding off the crowd.”

Along with the hometown connection, Team Silvernagle is also pushing fans to wear purple and come up with creative signs to cheer on their crew, and are urging fans to be a part of the #SilverSquad.

“We really want to play up this last event,” she said. “We want everyone wearing purple and cheering for us and getting loud. We want to make it as fun as possible.”

The tournament will also be a way of giving Silvernagle’s hometown fans something to look forward to. Her hometown of Biggar is fighting a large grassfire, which has left the town in a state of emergency.

“I just really hope that everyone is staying safe, and is being careful. I know a lot of people have posted on social media that the town is coming together, (I know) at times like this, they do. I just hope everyone is okay,” she said.
