1The Battlefords North Stars fell 1-0 Saturday night in Game 2 of their Canalta Cup Final series with the Melfort Mustangs at the Civic Centre.

With the win, the Mustangs even the best-of-seven championship series at a game apiece.

After a scoreless first period that saw the North Stars outshoot the Mustangs 12-9, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the second, thanks to defenseman Jake Hobson’s fifth of the playoffs.

Despite a 28-22 North Stars’ shot advantage by night’s end, Hobson’s tally would prove to be the lone goal of the evening.

Mustangs goalie, Shawn Parkinson, who saw his first action of the series after Noah Giesbrecht got the start in Game 1, made the most of his opportunity with the shutout win.

Stopping all 28 shots he faced on the night, Parkinson’s clean slate served as the 19-year-old rookie’s first career shutout in the SJHL.

Stars’ goalie Joel Grzybowski stopped 21 of the 22 shots sent his way, standing tall throughout the evening, while keeping his team in the game right to the final buzzer.

The series will now shift to Melfort for Games 3 and 4 of the teams’ Finals’ series Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Both games will be played on NAPA North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB, beginning with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
