Silvernagle looking to solidify herself as a force in women’s curling in Toronto

Biggar’s Robyn Silvernagle is on her path of solidifying her spot as one of the great curlers of 2019.

The skip of her foursome, who curls out of the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford had a strong start to the Players Championship in Toronto thus far, going 3-1 and notching wins against Rachel Homan and Jennifer Jones. They did have a slip up this morning against Manitoba’s Tracy Fleury, but that shouldn’t squander the fact that they came out with two convincing wins against the premier foursomes in not only the country, but the world.

Price Atkinson of CurlingZone first watched Silvernagle at the Meridian Canadian Open here in North Battleford in early January, and said watching the team is an incredible experience.

“Ever since I saw them for the first time, I was like ‘Wow this team can really play,’” he said. “Watching them, what they did there, and then at the Scotties, I had them as a dark-horse pick. They had nothing to hang their head about.”

When asked about when we will see this club mentioned in the same breath as the big guns of curling, Atkinson said he believes that there’s still a lot of work to do for the team, but they are on the right path.

“If they keep doing what they’re doing, it takes prolonged consistency,” he said. “They have so much to build on; the future is certainly bright with this team.”

In the first game of the tournament, Silvernagle bested Homan 7-4, then followed it up with a 7-3 win against Jennifer Jones. They defeated Elena Stern 5-4 yesterday, but followed that with a 7-3 loss against Fleury this morning.

Silvernagle is now preparing to play against another premier world curler this afternoon in Silvana Tirinzoni. Tirinzoni is the reigning Women’s World Curling Champion, after downing Anna Hasselborg in the finals in late March.

Regardless, Silvernagle has solidified her spot in the playoffs at the Players Championship in Toronto. As it stands now, she can finish no lower than second in her division, and with a little help, still has a shot at first in the pool.

The playoffs begin tomorrow, with the top eight advancing to the playoff bracket.
