Institute unveils ‘Team Canada of cancer research’ in city where Fox began run

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — It is being touted as the “Team Canada of cancer research.”

The Terry Fox Research Institute has launched a new national network to bring together leading cancer hospitals and research universities from across Canada.

The announcement today in St. John’s, N.L., was made exactly 39 years after Fox dipped his artificial leg in St. John’s harbour to begin his Marathon of Hope.

Though it was a humble, barely noticed beginning for one man’s bid to raise money for cancer research, Fox’s gritty determination to run across Canada inspired a nation.

The institute says the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres network will help accelerate so-called precision medicine for cancer patients.

Dr. Victor Ling, the institute’s president and scientific director, says the network will apply new technologies, advanced imaging and artificial intelligence to ensure cancer patients across the country have access to the care they need.
