Stars break goose egg in OT for 2-0 series lead

Mar 30, 2019 | 11:48 PM

The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Yorkton Terriers 1-0 in overtime of Game 2 of their best-of-seven semifinal matchup Saturday night at the NB Civic Centre.

Stars’ goalie, Joel Grzybowski made 40 stops on the night, and Quintin Loon-Stewardson pulled through with a goal midway through the first OT to lead the team to victory.

After three scoreless periods that saw the Stars lead the shot count 36-31 come the end of regulation, Game 2 was headed to overtime, still scoreless with the game – and each goaltenders’ potential shutout bid on the line.

In the extra frame, the Stars dominated possession, as indicated by the team’s 11-4 shot advantage, ultimately paying off with a breakthrough on a shot off the cycle game from the mid-slot taken by rookie, Quintin Loon-Stewardson.

For Loon-Stewardson, the game-winner marked his fifth goal, and tenth point of the postseason, electrifying the Civic Centre while pulling the Sioux Lookout, ON., product into a tie atop the playoff leaderboard in each offensive category.

Grzybowski, who played more minutes than any other goaltender in the league through the regular season and posted two shutouts in his 44 starts, now has two shutouts in just nine games played these playoffs.

The 19-year-old has posted six wins, with a 1.67 goals-against average and .952 save percentage through his team’s first nine games of the playoffs. Saturday night marked Grzybowski’s fourth 40-save performance.

At the other end, Ryan Oullette in the Yorkton crease, stopped 41 of the 42 pucks fired his way in the loss, keeping his team in it right to the very end.

With a 3.05 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, Oullette’s 41 saves marked the third time the 18-year-old has stopped 40-plus this spring.

Now holding a 2-0 series lead, the North Stars and Terriers will reunite Tuesday for Game 3 of the best-of-seven showdown, as the series shifts to Farrell Agencies Arena in Yorkton for Games 3 & 4.

The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB.
