Weather and crime heating up in the Battlefords

Mar 21, 2019 | 12:03 PM

With the weather warming up outside, it’s time to take extra precautions.

With the snow melt, Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt said members start to see an increase of crime.

“We have a lot of people who have addiction problems, with either drugs or alcohol. Some of these people are feeding their addictions by stealing people’s property,” he said.

As the snow melts, the city becomes a lot more accessible. Woolfitt has a few tips to ensure everything stays safe out there.

“Secure your property; don’t level things out that will create a crime of opportunity,” he said. “We do have people who are out checking on things every night, looking for easy to take items.”

Woolfitt mentioned locking your vehicles and homes, and ensuring that everything is secure. Loose change in vehicles, valuables that are easy to see, and anything with any monetary value is susceptible to be taken.

Having proper lighting will help when it comes to safety. The Battlefords RCMP usually deploy more patrolling around this time, making sure the city stays safe. Another option would also be video surveillance. Having a video or even a photo will help track down the suspects, and lend a hand to the Battlefords RCMP in creating some sort of lead right out of the gate.
