Beaver Blues take home 2019 SPHL League Championship

It was the perfect end to the perfect season for the Battleford Beaver Blues.

The Blues went undefeated in the post-season, and it was all capped off by Mike George’s overtime winner with less than four minutes into the overtime period. The win gave the Blues their third championship since 2012.

The game was back and forth throughout, with Battleford entering the second period with a 1-0 lead after a goal by Keegan Sparrow with 2:51 remaining in the period. Heading into two, it was Edam that got a quick two goals by Keegan McBride and Ty Anderson, respectively.

Early on in the third, Battleford responded with a goal of their own by Cody Danberg to tie it up. It looked as if we were destined for overtime at that point, but Edam had a response. Mitch Wall scored to go ahead by a score of 3-2, athough that lead did not last long.

Blake Oborowsky scored to tie it up, yet again, just over 20 seconds after the Wall goal. After sustained pressure for the final four minutes, it solved nothing.

Off to overtime. The extra frame started out without a flood and both teams on their heels. Edam couldn’t push back, and on a break, Danberg sauced it over to George who made no mistake and sealed the deal for Battleford.

The win sealed a 9-0, undefeated post-season by the Beaver Blues. They lost only twice during the regular season, finishing first in the league with a 14-2 regular season.
