Winter is leaving as spring-like conditions hit the Battlefords

Mar 11, 2019 | 12:01 PM

Mild weather to start to the week is bringing optimism for spring to the area. Winter doesn’t officially end until March 20, but temperatures are already spring-like in the Battlefords.

There will be a high of -2 Celsius today, followed by highs of 2 C Tuesday and Wednesday.

Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the higher temperatures are due to milder air pushing against the polar vortex the area was under for a number of weeks.

“(The) polar vortex retreated back to the arctic, where it should be,” she said. “It’ll be mostly up and down, but for the most part we’ll stay in the milder air.”

Lang said for now, there area will experience seasonal averages with highs of -1 C and nighttime lows of -11 C.

Lang said because it was a colder than normal winter, the ground remains frozen and will take a while for the actual melt to be sufficient for the area.

“If the snow starts melting too fast, the water has nowhere to go. That starts to create a lot of problems,” she said.

It’s unlikely the Battlefords will experience any more snowfall, as Lang said she doesn’t see any large weather patterns indicating that could happen.
