Battlefords Humane Society makes adoption easy

Mar 8, 2019 | 10:15 AM

There are tons of reasons to add another furry friend to your family.

Over at the Battlefords Humane Society, they’re trying to make it easier. They currently have over 80 cats and upwards of 30 dogs looking for homes, all looking for the perfect family to supply them.

It all starts with an application process that is filled out after you enter the doors at the Humane Society. There, you can take a look at some of the prospective pets that they have in the back. Some of the questions on the application pertain to who you are, what you do in your spare time, what you do for work, and your housing situation. Also, if you have other pets or have had them in the past, it’s also noted on the application.

Interested in adding a furry friend to your family? Brady Lang was at the Battlefords Humane Society yesterday to learn more about the adoption process and what is needed to bring your new family member home.

The Humane Society’s Michelle Spark says this is strictly due to the fact that they want to find the right family for each and every animal that is in their care.

“We’re not going to give a six-month old Lab puppy that’s super active to a 90-year-old woman that sits at home and knits all day. We want to make sure we match the right dog, or cat, with the right owner.”

There is the option of having a home-visit with your prospective pet before you officially put pen to paper and take your new family member home. This will give an indication if it’s the right fit, and if both your family and pet will mesh together to create a happy environment.

The adoption costs range from $275 for all dogs, to cats which range from $150 to $80. Included in the fees are spaying and neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, a free vet visit, 30 days free pet insurance, lifetime support from the Battlefords Humane Society, and a complimentary adoption bag which includes toys, treats, food and all the essentials to welcome the new pet into the home.

It’s important to make sure your house is also ready to welcome the new addition to the family. Making sure that there are no loose wires, stairs are covered, toxic plants and all other precautions are taken care of.

Spark says it isn’t crucial that you have a fenced-in back yard, but it’s definitely a plus, and to make sure you have a collar, leash, kennel, food and a set up to make the transition as easy as possible.

When it comes to the actual animal you’re picking up, Spark says that it’s important to remember that shelter animals need homes too.

“All the shelters across Canada are extremely overloaded. We get all the stray animals from around the area,” she said. “They’re so full of love, that’s all they want, along with attention.”

It’s not just dogs and cats that the Humane Society has. They also have housed guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, and even a pot belly pig.

Spark says that the price is worth it, as you’re able to have everything included to have a happy and healthy new family friend. She said, if you were to get a dog for free, vet bills, neutering and spaying and multiple other costs could run up a pretty big tab. Here, you can have everything in one convenient cost.

Emotionally though, Spark says that you can’t put a price on what you’ll gain.

“Their loyal, they want your love and attention, and we can give all that to them for free,” she said. “You’re gaining everything.”
