Town issues safety reminder as moose spotted on loose in Battleford

Mar 5, 2019 | 1:19 PM

There was a moose on the loose in the town of Battleford Monday.

The calf was called in by a concerned resident, when they spotted the wildlife on Finlayson Island roaming the trails. Battleford’s Parks and Recreation Director Jordan Schechtel says it’s common to see a variety of animals on the trails.

“It’s a natural trail system; people can encounter moose, deer, foxes, coyotes,” he said. “When they go down there they should be prepared.”

In a Facebook post, the town gave tips for if you do encounter a moose on the trails of Finlayson Island.

Sharing the trails with the wildlife is one of the unique aspects that Finlayson Island offers for residents who are hiking on the trails, or taking a look around. Schechtel says that due to the area’s location on the river, it’s important to expect the unexpected.

“It goes through the river system down there; lots of the wildlife do follow the river onto the island. There is lots of wildlife down there,” he said.

There were no reports on if the moose was captured, or if it wandered back into the wilderness.
