It’s provincial and playoff time in the Battlefords

Feb 22, 2019 | 12:02 PM

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Playoffs and provincials continue around the area on the ice, and we’ll start off with the Saskatchewan Prairie League, which is in the semi-finals of playoff matchups.

Meota and Edam played their second game of their best of five series last night at the Civic Centre, with Edam taking a two-game lead in an 8-6 win over Meota. The Combines will be on the brink of elimination next Friday when the two teams square off at 7:30 p.m. in Edam.

On the other side of the bracket, it’s Battleford and Shellbrook vying for a spot in the finals. Their first game goes tonight in Battleford, with puck-drop at 7:30 p.m.

Meota are the reigning champions, winning the title in 2017-18.

In the SaskWest, the semifinals continue for Unity, Wilkie, Macklin and Kindersley.

No games have been played as of yet, but everything starts tonight when the Miners match up with the Outlaws at 8:30 p.m. in Wilkie. On the other side, Macklin and Kindersley face off on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in their first game in Kindersley.

Just two games remain for the Battlefords AAA Stars, as the season concludes on a disappointing note. The team switched coaches mid-season, and will end up outside of the playoff picture. Their final two games of the season do come at home, with back-to-back games against the Notre Dame Hounds at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks will take on Swift Current in their first round series. The team finished off the regular season with a 7-13-4-4 record, on their way to a sixth place finish. Their first game will be in Swift on March 7 at 7:45 p.m., and they’ll welcome the Bobcats to the Battleford Arena the following night at 8:15 p.m. The series is a best of five.

The Midget AA’s finished the season in third in the SAAHL standings, and set up a first round matchup with the Prince Albert Dairy Queen Chill. After a win in game one by a score of 7-4, the Barons dropped game two last night in overtime by a score of 4-3. The five-game series continues tomorrow at the Civic Centre at 2:30 p.m.

In provincials, the Midget A Battlefords Barons have a date with Martensville in round one. Game one goes Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Civic Centre. In Bantam A, the Battlefords is set to tangle with Swift Current. Game one of two in that series is in Swift Current next Wednesday.
