Stars win third straight, close gap on Klippers

Feb 16, 2019 | 8:51 AM

The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Kindersley Klippers 3-2 Friday night at West Central Events Centre.

The victory gives the North Stars 57 points in the standings, putting the team tied with Humboldt for second in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, just two points back of the Klippers.

Owen Lamb opened the scoring just two minutes into the opening period, scoring his 23rd of the year on the Stars’ first power play of the game, making it 1-0 early for the Battlefords.

Then, just four minutes later, Elijah Loon-Stewardson would make it 2-0 on a shot out front, beating the goalie clean from the high slot to give his team a 2-0 lead on just their fifth shot of the game.

The goal marked Loon-Stewardson’s 15th of the season and fifth goal in his last six games.

Kindersley would cut the lead in half, however, thanks to Will Van der Sloot’s ninth of the season and first of the game.

The first period would come to a close with a 2-1 North Stars’ lead.

In the second, Matthew Fletcher would wire home a shot from the point, again beating Kindersley goaltender Zach Johnson cleanly, to reestablish a two-goal advantage for his team.

Fletcher’s third of the season was ultimately the lone goal scored in the middle period.

In the third, Kindersley’s Van der Sloot would pot his second of the game, and tenth of the campaign, again bringing his team to within one of the Stars on the scoreboard.

Stars’ goaltender Joel Grzybowski shut the door for his team, cementing his club’s victory, despite an ultimate 30-18 shot advantage for the hometown Klippers. Stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the contest, Grzybowski posted a .933 save percentage in the win.

The North Stars will return to action tomorrow night against the Melfort Mustangs in Melfort. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on 1050 with the Napa North Stars Hockey broadcast.
