Girl Guides planning fundraising race, games

Feb 15, 2019 | 9:00 AM

The Girl Guides are hoping the community will show its support for an upcoming fundraiser they are planning this Spring called Adventure Quest.

The Battlefords Girl Guides fun event will take place Sunday, May 5, and is somewhat similar to The Amazing Race Canada.

The day of activities is open to the whole community, and includes a variety of games, such as a scavenger hunt and other activities that will take place throughout the Battlefords.

“Anybody can join,” said Niki Forester, one of the guide leaders. “We’re looking for teams, or people who want to sponsor teams.”

To take part in the event, people work in teams of two to four individuals to complete the various skill-testing challenges.

A pancake breakfast is planned to kick off the event. There will also be prizes for many of the lucky participants.

People who don’t want to personally join in the race can simply sponsor a team, at a cost of $100 per team of two to four people. Businesses are also welcome to sponsor a team.

Forester’s daughter Alexandra Kinar, 13, is organizing the event as part of her work with the Girl Guides Pathfinders program.

“I am planning an event as part of the requirements to earn the Canada Cord, the highest award in Pathfinders,” said Kinar.

Funds raised from the event will help the local Girl Guides take part in a trip to New Zealand in the future, where they will learn about the country while staying with some New Zealand Girl Guides’ families.

Forester said taking part in the Girl Guides and with the Pathfinders program is a good way for youth to build their skills and confidence. It has been a positive influence for her daughter as well.

“It’s teaching (Kinar) how to goal sets,” Forester said of her daughter’s growth within the program, adding: “She is building friendships, and is emerging as a bit of a leader, I like that.”
