NBCHS wind up is Better Together

Feb 14, 2019 | 1:57 PM

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School is hosting an in-house basketball game this afternoon at the NBCHS gymnasium as the Grade 7 boys will take on the Junior B girls in an end-of the year wrap-up game.

Adding a unique twist to the festivities, the high school has also brought the Battlefords’ Better Together initiative into the fold, inviting seniors from Davidson Manor to take part in the celebration.

The city’s handy bus will pick up seniors wishing to attend the basketball game, which starts at 4 p.m.

Upon arrival at the school, some of the Grade 10’s that were involved in the better together festivities, visiting the senior’s home previously, will greet the seniors and usher them to their seats. At the end of the game, the handy bus will return to the Manor.

Meghan Heselwood, coach of the girls’ team, organized the event and said Battlefords’ Better Together is an important initiative within the community because it helps bring a diverse range of people together, who may not otherwise meet.

“The students are seeing that they can interact with a different group and still be accepted,” Heselwood said. “[They are] able to share their stories with these seniors, but also learn from them. Just talking and getting to know each other, you realize that it’s okay to say hi to people in the community when you might not know them. A smile on your face goes a long way, and the kids have really taken to being an advocate for that change.”

Feeder schools to the Comp were also invited to attend the game today. Students from elementary schools such as Connaught, Bready, Lawrence and McKitrick will also pack the stands for, in some cases, their first time inside the high school.

Heselwood believes an event like this presents an excellent opportunity to showcase to young students what NBCHS is all about, as a welcoming and inviting place to be.

“Many of those schools have classes that are involved with the Better Together, so we’re hoping we’ll see some kids out there cheering. Just being able to come to the high school is a big deal for a lot of our younger students, so to have a positive experience here first is what we’re hoping to provide.”
