Local soccer coach honoured with provincial nomination

Feb 13, 2019 | 5:14 PM

A local coach for Battlefords FC was nominated for a major honour in the province.

Kat Huxley has coached since she was 18, and is involved in the development of players on and off the field for Battlefords Youth Soccer, where she is the president and competitive coordinator. She was recently nominated for Sask Soccers Grassroots Coach of the Year.

Huxley said she was overwhelmed by the nomination.

“(I was) very, very excited,” she said. “I grinned ear to ear, and did a little happy dance on the spot.”

Huxley played soccer since she was four years old. Many of the athletes she works with end up go on to play for the North American Indigenous Games, and scouted for colleges. Previously, her team in 2015 was named the Grassroots Team of the Year, and won multiple medals at provincials and tournaments along the way.

She spearheaded the creation of Battlefords United FC in 2016, by merging programs together to create a cohesive unit for the Battlefords and area. Huxley said without the help and support from players, volunteers, parents and other coaches, there would be no way she could have got to this position, let alone be nominated for an award of this calibre.

“I know that some days are cold to get to soccer, some days are hard, sometimes there are long walks, some days are days you just want to stay at home, but I know that I couldn’t do any of this without (the support),” she said.

She doesn’t know who nominated her for the award, but learned there were many who did. Saskatoon’s Daniel Cote was also nominated for the award.

The winner will be announced at the Sask Soccers AGM in Regina on March 23.
