Wintertainment offers families week of fun activities

Feb 11, 2019 | 5:25 PM

North Battleford families won’t have far to go to spend Winter Break this year.

The city is once again hosting Wintertainment – a week long bevy of fun activities for the kids and families to enjoy.

Mayor Ryan Bater said the event is a great way for families to get out and about and maybe try some new sports at the same time.

“The city is offering lots of opportunities for individuals and families to get active during the winter,” Bater said. “We are a unique community in Saskatchewan because we have just as much going on in the wintertime as we do in the summertime.”

He said Wintertainment will also be a chance for people to take part in activities they maybe haven’t tried before.

The event runs from Sunday, Feb. 17 to Saturday, Feb. 23. Many of the events are free or at a reasonable cost.

People taking part also have a chance to win prizes. Anyone who posts pictures to the City of North Battleford’s Official Facebook Page with the hashtag #wintertainment of any Wintertainment activity they participate in will be eligible. There is also a colouring contest available at the CUplex, with a prize draw planned for Feb. 25.

Wintertainment will kick off on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with horse-drawn sleigh rides, winter crafts, snowshoeing, a hotdog roast, a chili cook-off, and hot chocolate to enjoy at Battlefords River Valley Visitor Centre.

The Wildlife Federation will provide the snowshoes for the event.

On Family Day Monday, Feb. 18 families can visit the Aquatic Centre and Field House to play board games from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The city will also be hosting Winter Break Camps for kids from Feb. 19 to 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nations West Field House and Battlefords Co-Op Aquatic Centre. People need to register in advance by calling 306-445-1745. The cost for the camp is $42 per child to take part.

Families who enjoy creative activities will want to take part in an afternoon of winter craft-making at the Allen Sapp Gallery on Feb. 19, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a small $2 drop-in fee. Attendees are asked to register in advance by calling 306-445-1760 or email sapp5@accesscomm.ca, as space is limited to 45 participants.

On Wacky Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., family members who want to try something new should plan to take part in some of the fun activities offered at the Field House. There will be an indoor golf driving range, ladder golf, bocce ball, disc golf with Battlefords Disc Golf Club, as well as wall climbing.

On Feb. 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., families can sample s’mores at Rotary Plaza.

On Feb. 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be fun activities at the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre, with prices “from 1999,” the city touts. There will also be door prizes.

Feb. 22 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be drop in curling at the Northlands Power Curling Centre with all equipment provided. Those attending are asked to bring clean indoor shoes. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for non members.

Families can lace up all week, from Feb. 19 to 23 for free public skating at the Civic Centre. For details and times see the city’s website. No hockey sticks are allowed for public skating.
