North Stars drop tight one to Mustangs

Feb 7, 2019 | 8:36 AM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 5-3 to the Melfort Mustangs Wednesday night at Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Kaden Boser opened the scoring, depositing a rebound out front, hammering it home for his third of the season and second goal in his last three games.

Colton Schell scored his first of the season to tie things 1-1, deflecting a shot from the blueline in front to even the stakes for his team.

Just two minutes after tying things up, Melfort struck again to reverse the lead entirely, thanks to George King’s fifth of the season from Parker Fofonoff and Colin Schmidt.

The Mustangs lead 2-1 heading into the first intermission, with each team having collected 12 shots on goal. In the second, the North Stars answered back with two-straight goals of their own, each coming courtesy of the team’s top line.

After Braydon Buziak made it 2-2 on his 16th of the year off a pass from Owen Lamb scoring his sixth tally over his last eight games, the recently-turned 21-year-old returned the favour, giving Lamb a crisp feed to capitalize on his 20th goal of the season, reestablishing his team’s advantage and moving into sole possession of second on the team in goals.

The second-period scoring, however, would not end there. With just over two minutes to go, the Mustangs’ top unit scored, with Carson Albrecht picking up his 28th of the season from Tanner Zentner and Justin Ball.

Just like that, the game was again tied, this time 3-3 with just twenty minutes remaining in regulation time. In the third, both goals scored belonged to the Mustangs.

After Zentner added to his evening, contributing to his team by delivering the go-ahead goal at 4-3 with just under a half-period remaining, Justin Ball struck, adding to his league lead in scoring, by picking up his 47th goal and 84th point on the season to seal things out 5-3.

Stars’ goalie Joel Grzybowski stopped 21 of the 26 shots he faced on the night, while Melfort’s Noah Giesbrecht turned aside 27 of 30 sent his way.

The North Stars will return to action Friday, Feb. 8 for their lone home game of the month, as the team welcomes the Yorkton Terriers to the Civic Centre.
