School cancellations

Class, bus cancellations vary on several factors

Feb 5, 2019 | 2:58 PM

Cold winter weather is typically an inconvenience, but schools are starting to take note of the growing number of bus and class cancellations its caused.

For school cancellations, there are both cut and dry policies, as well as a grey area when it comes to the road conditions and snow days.

For Treaty 6 Education Council, there are issues when it comes to developing policies on cancellations due to inclement weather. Sometimes it’s not having a clear path for a bus to drive due to a lack of plows. For Sarah Thompson, an IT support learning coordinator, she said it’s a matter of keeping kids safe.

“Because each school is different, it’s just looking after the safety of the children,” she said.

Classes are typically cancelled when temperatures lower past -40 Celsius. Buses are not equipped with proper heating, which could make travelling unsafe, especially when roads aren’t plowed. Despite a standard policy, It still falls on each and every school to dictate whether classes or buses will run.

Sometimes the weather leads to late starts.

“We have a lot of teachers and staff that live in and around North Battleford,” Thompson said. “If they can’t get to school, there’s nobody there to watch any students that get to school.”

The Living Sky School Division, announces cancellations on its website.

Every morning, when battlefordsNOW is notified by these schools, they will be announced on CJNB-CJNS, Q98 and 93.3 The Rock, as well as our Facebook page. To notify of any cancellations, call the newsroom at 306-446-6397 or email cjnbnews@jpbg.ca.
