Conservatives won’t use Heritage Minute branding on attack ad any more

Feb 4, 2019 | 2:14 PM

OTTAWA — The Conservatives say they’ll take all the Heritage Minute branding off a web advertisement they released on the weekend.

The ad angered the charity that produces the real ads promoting Canadian history.

The Historica Foundation has been making the one-minute films for nearly 30 years, depicting everything from the invention of basketball to the arrival of Vietnamese refugees to the War of 1812.

The Tories used the Heritage Minute format to attack the Liberal government’s ethics record, recounting times ministers have been found in breach of federal rules as if they were landmark events.

The Historica Foundation objected, saying parodies are OK but Heritage Minutes shouldn’t be used for partisan political purposes.

The Conservatives first put up a new version of the ad with a long disclosure saying the ad isn’t a real Heritage Minute, but now say they’ll remove all Heritage Minute branding because they don’t want to draw any negative attention to the Historica Foundation.
