Juno nominee makes an unexpected return to Prince Albert

An unexpected concert cancellation in Saskatoon, may end up being a bit of good news for Prince Albert music lovers.

Tyler Shaw, who was recently nominated for the 2019 Juno Awards, will make a stop in Prince Albert as part of his Intuition Tour.

Shaw was raised in Coquitlam, B.C., but has family based in Prince Albert and is familiar with the city himself.

“The (family) homestead in Prince Albert has been there over 100 years,” Shaw said. “My roots run deep down in P.A. The music kind of always finds its way home, and I’ve never done a show in Prince Albert. I’m excited, I’m very excited to, in a way, bring the music home.”

When he was 19-years-old, as a first-year sociology student at University of Prince Edward Island, Shaw was encouraged by a friend to make a cover and take part in the Coca-Cola MuchMusic Covers Contest 2012 and was one of 13,000 people who applied.

His original audition video was a cover of Hedley’s Invincible, which put him in the top 15 of the contestant finalists. With a cover of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep he proceeded to the top 10 and through his interpretation of Britney Spears’ I Wanna Go to the top three. The results were announced during the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards where Shaw was announced as the winner.

Shaw will perform at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre of the Arts Monday, Feb. 4.

“I know my great-grandfather used to be a part of the P.A. wedding band, so he used to go around to homesteads in the countryside and play around every summer,” Shaw said. “I’m just excited to bring the music home.”
