Record year for development in the Battlefords

Jan 31, 2019 | 1:10 PM

It was a boon year for development in the Battlefords.

As of Dec. 31, 2018, the value of 131 building permits in the city totalled about $27 million. Seven new commercial builds alone last year amounted to around $17.5 million.

Total permit values for commercial alterations were about $4.9 million.

In comparison, the value of 117 permits 2017 came in at about $17.5 million. New commercial builds totalled roughly $10.5 million.

North Battleford’s Director of Planning and Development Jennifer Niesink told council Monday some of the large commercial projects underway were responsible for much of the increase – two new hotels and the new four-screen theatre and Giant Tiger being built downtown.

Across the river, 34 permits in the town amounted to about $27 million for 2018, according to a recent report.

Nearly three-quarters of that, however, came from one new commercial build valued at $20 million.

Nine permits for new residential builds came in near $4.6 million. The 2018 totals are the highest in 20 years.

In 2017, the town had a total value of just $6 million for 41 building permits.

Total building permit values for both the city and town total $54 million.
