Young Orcas make a splash in Meadow Lake

This past weekend was the perfect time for some members of the Battlefords Orcas Swim Club to get their feet wet.

The club travelled to Meadow Lake for a developmental meet between Cold Lake and the host club. Over half of the 10 swimmers taking part for the Orcas were racing in their first meet ever, which made this the perfect type of meet for Head Coach John Mcleod as he continues to build the program after taking over the head coaching reigns in July.

Mcleod said it was a great competition, and for the younger competitors, a big part was getting that initial experience in the pool.

“(The competitors) got a good mix of different strokes, and they got to interact with other teams in the region,” he said.

Mcleod said a large part of coaching in this region for him is becoming a leader. In taking part in these developmental programs, it builds the relationship with the neighbouring programs and adds to the performance level of the area. The coach said it was nice to see the programs coming together and helping each other to improve swimming in the northwestern part of the province, and even into Alberta.

“I want to be known as a leader in the region, and this helps out with that,” he said. “Our younger kids are helping out their younger kids.”

Moving forward, the Orcas now set their sights on their next major meet, which starts Feb. 8 in Saskatoon. The three day event welcomes swimmers from across Western Canada, and for the Orcas, it’s a chance to improve their times while matching up against some of the best in the nation.
