Muyres’ continued struggles, Gushue’s extra end win highlight day two of 2019 Meridian Canadian Open

Following a thrilling start to the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open at the Civic Centre, five games highlighted the 3 p.m. draw at the tournament on day two.

Unfortunately for Saskatoon’s Kirk Muyres, the second day yielded all-too-familiar results, as his rink fell 8-3 to Kingston’s Scott McDonald in six ends.

Despite the loss, Muyres said he did notice an improvement in the second of the team’s two games, a contest that remained close, with Muyres actually leading 2-0 after through the first two ends, before falling behind by a combined 7-1 margin over ends three to five, a deficit that would prove too steep for Muyres and company to return from.

“I felt a little bit better than yesterday, and then we just got stung in the fifth end there,” he said. “I had one that just didn’t quite curl enough which cost us, gave them the big end, but if it wasn’t for that, the game would’ve been a different story, we probably have a good chance to win it. At the end of the day, I just have to play a little better, the guys are playing good.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, with their backs now against the wall in this triple-knockout format, Muyres said the biggest thing for his squad will be getting their confidence back

“Just getting a few nice easy shots under our belt early will be key,” he said. “We’ve been starting off the games really good, and it’s just a matter of getting out of your own head and just throwing freely and staying patient, knowing the good things are going to come, hopefully starting tomorrow.”

The final matchup of the afternoon to conclude came via extra ends, when Brad Gushue’s rink defeated Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson 4-3, rebounding from a tough 5-4 defeat last night to Howard. With the win, the 2017 champions improve to 1-1 on the tournament.

“I think we’re playing very well,” Gushue said following the victory. “I think last night we played really, really good too. Glenn (Howard) made some great shots, some timely shots, and really that’s all it was, he made some good ones at key times and was able to pull that off.

“We had a similar sort of situation today and fortunately we made a couple of those timely shots today,” Gushue continued.

Those timely shots allowed team Gushue to hold the hammer in the extra end, a huge advantage in a tight game right down to the finish.

In other action on the day, Rachel Homan defeated Laura Walker’s rink 8-5 in the lone woman’s showdown, while Howard edged out their second straight win to remain 2-0 on the tournament, defeating Niklas Edin 4-2.

Scottland’s Bruce Mouat doubled up on John Epping’s rink 6-3.
