Silvernagle takes win in first draw at 2019 Meridian Canadian Open

Jan 9, 2019 | 2:00 PM

It was the one North Battleford was waiting for.

The third draw of the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open concluded with exciting finishes, including a big one for Robyn Silvernagle.

Silvernagle’s North Battleford rink won a tight game, which wasn’t indicated by the score whatsoever. After a back and forth start, the rink took advantage of Tracy Fleury and her rink’s slight mistakes, scoring a triple in the seventh end. It put a stranglehold on the game, which was conceded by Fleury with just one rock to throw. Silvernagle said it was all about sticking to what they had drawn up beforehand.

“Force a one, get two, we got a little fortunate getting three in [the seventh end]. That helps to have control going into that eighth end.”

It was a quick paced game, as at times, they were an entire end ahead of those around them. That wasn’t a part of their entire gameplan, but Silvernagle knows it worked in their favour, to an extent.

“Our game didn’t get too complicated, which keeps the (pace) up,” she said. “I am definitely a fast skip. I don’t like to take my time. I’m surprised that our game was really quick.”

The rink was full of Silvernagle fans, including an entire section with school kids from Grades 5 to7. They were loud, cheering on each of SIlvernagle’s shots en route to the victory. Silvernagle knows that was a huge help in their victory, and having the fans on their side is something she didn’t take for granted.

“It’s so great to have the fans out here cheering when you’re making shots and even after the game was over, being so supportive,” she said.

Up next for the team will be American Nina Roth. Roth defeated Kerri Einarson earlier on in the day to set up the matchup, which is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.

In other draw action, it was a big day for Saskatchewan. Matt Dunstone’s Regina rink made a clutch shot to win it, sneaking in a 5-4 victory over Braden Calvert.

Dunstone will play Brendan Bottcher tonight at 7 p.m.

Switzerland’s Peter De Cruz got past Brad Jacobs by a score of 6-5 in another tight game.

In an international matchup, Eve Muirhead of Scotland cruised to victory over Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg 7-2, while Jennifer Jones scored four in the seventh to defeat Isabella Wrana by a score of 8-2.
