Battlefords residents learn to run five-kilometre loop in new course

Jan 3, 2019 | 11:00 AM

Those with a yearning to run a five-kilometre course as part of their New Year’s resolutions will have an opportunity to do just that with a new program offered at the NationsWest Field House in North Battleford.

The Learn To Run 5 K course is open to all ages and will take place twice a week over nine weeks.

“Every day you’ll increase your running a little bit,” Siobhan Gormley, City of North Battleford Leisure Services community programmer/booking manager, said. “You start off with a run-walk. You will walk for a couple of minutes, run for a minute, then gradually increase the amount of time you run. By the end of (the program), you’ll complete [five kilometres].”

Gormley said this is a good time in the year to set goals, while adding that this goal is also “very attainable.”

She said the program was offered previously although it wasn’t available last year.

“We’ve had a few people ask for it,” Gormley said. “They just didn’t know where to begin. Maybe they had been walking and jogging outside and set a goal to run [five kilometres]. They asked us if we would be interested in running (the program) if we could find an instructor.”

While it’s best if participants can attend every session, they can always catch up if they miss a class.

“There is plenty of time during the week, if you missed one you can definitely do the session on your own,” she said.

The program instructor is Natasha Nichol, a local school teacher, who will be leading the course, while Gormley will help facilitate it.

The aim of the course aim isn’t focused on attaining a good timing but rather simply to be able to complete the distance.

Participants will be able to increase their cardiovascular activity and increase the amount of time they are exercising too. All they need are a pair of clean running shoes and comfortable clothing to take part.

Gormley said she also has experience herself running races in the Battlefords.

She said people shouldn’t be intimidated at the prospect of the course.

“It’s a very doable form of exercise to increase running (distance) each week,” Gormley added. “At your own pace, you can walk as fast as you want. You don’t have to keep up with the group. The Field House is good for that because around the track you can see everybody. People can go at their own speed; it’s not a competition by any means.”

Advance registration is required. The course which costs $84, runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. from Jan. 21 to March 20. Anyone interested can sign up at the Field House or at the Don Ross Centre’s central booking office.
