A busy weekend on the ice in the Battlefords and area

Dec 14, 2018 | 11:00 AM

There’s tons of action on the ice this weekend, in the senior leagues and in all three arenas in the Battlefords.

First off, a busy night of action in the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League tonight, with six teams set to take the ice.

Starting at 8 p.m., the game will be a matchup between the top team in the league in the Battleford Beaver Blues (4-1) and the Perdue Pirates (2-4) in Deslile. Battleford is coming off an 11-2 win over Maymont last weekend, while Perdue slipped past Radisson 5-4 in their last contest.

Over in Radisson, the Meota Combines are on their way to town, looking to stay undefeated early on in the season. They are 3-0 and sit in fourth with six points, while Radisson had a tough start, currently last in the league with just one point on the year. That game in Radisson is set for puck drop at 8 p.m.

Finally, it’s hockey night in Edam as the Three Stars are set to host Glaslyn at 8:30 p.m. Both teams had similar starts to the year, with Edam going 2-1-1 and Glaslyn sitting at .500 with a 2-2 start. Edam’s Mitch Wall is currently two points off the scoring lead with 13 on the year, slightly back of Maymont’s Conner Kortko.

In the Sask West Hockey League, it’s a bit quieter. Just one game tonight over in Wilkie where the Outlaws are set to take on the Macklin Mohawks at 8:30 p.m. Wilkie currently leads the SWHL standings at 8-0, while the Mohawks are in fifth, but have only played five games this season. They’re 0-4-1 in those contests.

It’s not just senior action headlining the weekend, with the Bantam B tournament set to take over all three rinks in the Battlefords this weekend. Games start at 4:30 p.m. today, and the tournament runs until Sunday.
