Boys and Girls Club youth take to the skies thanks to generous gift

Dec 12, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Battlefords Boys and Girls Club youngsters spent Sunday with their heads firmly in the clouds when they took advantage of a free airplane ride over the Battlefords, t courtesy of a local pilot and businessman.

Executive director Nicole Combres said a total of 44 kids from ages five to 14 took part.

The kids were “ecstatic they were going to be able to go on an airplane” when they first found out about the event, she said.

“For many of our children and youth it was their first time ever being on an airplane,” she added. “It was really a memorable moment for them.”

Pilot and local businessman, Scott Campbell, donated the free flight time during a live auction fundraiser for Battlefords Boys and Girls Club’s annual gala in November. Many people who attended the gala offered bids on the opportunity to send children on an airplane ride over Battlefords.

Campbell, as well as pilots Fran de Kock, and Pat Pernitsky, took the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club youth for the plane rides at the local airport in North Battleford. The event started around 9 a.m. and wrapped up at about 2 p.m. A parent or guardian accompanied each child participating in the event.

“It was a full day – full of lots of excitement for our members,” said Combres.

She added it was also a great experience for staff to witness the “joy and excitement” the kids were experiencing by having that opportunity.

Combres said it wouldn’t have been possible without the “overwhelming support received during our gala event.”

She thanked Scott Campbell as well as his family and the community for all their support in helping make this experience for the kids a reality.
