Grant for Battlefords Humane Society will help with new facility

Dec 11, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Members of the Battlefords Humane Society are paws-itively ecstatic with news North Battleford city council has approved a grant request to the tune of $271,893.

From that amount, $149,000 is for an operating grant for the existing site, and the remaining $122,893 is for an additional capital grant to help with the cost of the new building being planned to replace the shelter.

“We’re very happy to hear that the funding is available for us,” shelter coordinator Michelle Spark told battlefordsNOW. “We are still in the process of ironing out details of the agreement between the city and the humane society.”

The project is slated to move ahead next year. Mayor Ryan Bater said the shelter has a great need for the funding.

“One of the biggest operational budget changes overall was the Battlefords Humane Society,” Bater said following Monday’s council meeting.

He said council made its decisions when approving grant applications based on the need, and the local Humane Society’s needs were identified as a high priority.

“We’re going to be providing a capital grant for five years for the replacement of the current shelter,” added Bater. “Anybody who visits that (current) facility knows it needs to be replaced.”

Some concerns with the existing shelter include the quality of the structure itself as well as ventilation issues, as an example.

The mayor said the building is “way past its useful life,” adding that it’s “high time for a new facility.”

Bater said the city will be finalizing a contract with the Humane Society hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
