Still time to apply to receive Christmas Hamper

Nov 28, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Now is the time for local area families hoping to receive a Christmas Hamper for the holidays to submit an application to be considered for the program.

Applications will be accepted until Dec. 7, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre at 1171-101 St. in North Battleford.

Christmas Hampers will be handed out at the centre on Dec. 23 to those who qualify. As well, families with children up to 15 years of age will also receive a toy for each child, depending on availability.

Food hampers may contain a turkey or ham, depending on the size of family applying.

Manager Heather O’Neill said the hampers will include a variety of items.

“They will get a box of pancake mix, cereal, fruit, and the stuff to make a turkey dinner – potatoes, turkey and stuffing,” said O’Neill, adding families also will receive soup, coffee, peanut butter and jam in their container.

People will be accepted for the hamper program, based on their need. They will be asked to present a proof of income, such as a pay stub, social services cheque stub or student loan statement for example, as well as proof of their expenses. They will also need to provide valid identification when applying.

The hamper project serves people in the Battlefords and surrounding communities. Last year a total of 468 hampers and almost 800 toys were handed out.

People receiving a hamper will find the food should last them well beyond Christmas Day.

Volunteers needed

The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre is looking for volunteers to help during the month of December – a busy time for the organization. Anyone who wants to assist should complete a volunteer application available on the centre’s website.
