City switches insurance providers

Nov 27, 2018 | 4:48 PM

The City of North Battleford hopes to save taxpayers some money by changing insurance providers for the year ahead.

The issue came up at council’s meeting Monday. Council decided to award SUMAssure the city’s insurance plan contract for 2019.

Mayor Ryan Bater said switching to the new provider will save city taxpayers about $253,000 as a result.

“It’s always good to tender out your major contracts, especially insurance, and 2012 was the last time we had done so,” he said following the meeting. He added he was pleased to see the savings was significant.

“It was an attractive proposal to receive,” Bater added.

The city received three tenders before deciding to go with SUMAssure, which offered the highest savings. SUMAssure also had the lowest cost of the three bids at $307,497.

SUMAssure is a subscriber-owned, subscriber-governed insurance program designed for Saskatchewan urban municipalities. Council also agreed to have North Battleford’s city manager and mayor lobby to place the city’s finance manager on the SUMAssure board of directors for 2019.

Here are a few other issues council also eyed during its meeting:

– Parking spaces: The city agreed to sell a small portion of its city parking lot off 102 St. near 13 Ave. for $24,000 to a local law office to use. Since the space is narrow, and could accommodate only several smaller vehicles, the city determined the useful-purpose value was negligible. This property was also not included in the city’s overall plan for public parking.

Land turnover: The city agreed to sell a 1.23-acre area of property making up a roadway in front of Gold Eagle Lodge for $1 to Battlefords Tribal Council Management Corp. The purchaser will also cover the city’s roughly $6,150 administrative costs associated with the land sale and transfer process. The property was owned by Battlefords Tribal Council Management Corp. (BTCMC) prior to the transfer, so the city believed it should be returned to BTCMC, with the title transferred to its related party — Western Eagle Lodge Management General Partner Inc.

– Coalition funding: The city announced it has collected funding related to an initiative involving a Regional Coalition partnership comprised of The City of North Battleford, The Town of Battleford, and area First Nations. The city received $51,000 in federal funding and $24,000 from the Brett Wilson Foundation for the project. The city will be responsible for disbursing the funds. The coalition was developed as part of a community safety strategy.
