WDM ready to Light Up the Village through the holiday season

Nov 22, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Its time to catch the holiday spirit with the Western Development Museum.

The WDM is getting ready to host its second annual Light Up the Village event tonight. The event is a fan favourite in the city, with people coming out in droves for to see the WDM sparkle.

Joyce Smith, manager of the WDM, said this year’s event is bigger and better than their inaugural year. There will be more lights and more display as the event continues to grow.

“When you see it, you will go wow,” she said, to sum up the work done by volunteers.

Smith added it’s a self guided tour, and people can take their time going through to experience the displays. It’s $5 per vehicle, with a maximum of six passengers per tour.

Last year, the weather did cause some problems for the museum, but through the bitter temperatures, people still enjoyed themselves. Smith said that they have to close if the temperature dips below minus 25 degrees, but that’s not in the forecast for their opening weekend.

“The cold weather was a bit of a problem (last year),” she said. “(But) everything was absolutely wonderful.”

The event runs every Thursday to Saturday throughout the holiday season, running to January 5.

All proceeds go to support the Heritage Village repairs and restoration. Special event rentals, horse drawn and walking tours are also available for the event.
