AAA Sharks to host celebration night

Nov 21, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The Battlefords AAA Sharks are hosting a celebration of their team, and minor hockey in the Battlefords, at their Dec. 1 game against Weyburn at the Battleford Arena.

Dave Amson, Director of the Sharks, gave an idea of what fans can expect when they come out for the game.

“We’re gonna have some giveaways at the door when people come in, and there’s going to be some refreshments that are going to be given away as well,” Amson said. “We’re going to have a little bit of a program just before the start of the game. We’re hoping to have a fun day and just celebrate having a team here in the community.”

As far as the importance of hockey in the community, with teams available at the AA Bantam and AA Midget levels, in addition to AAA, Amson said he believes the community’s support for its teams will help women continue to play longer due to increased opportunity locally at home.

“I think if you didn’t have [so many opportunities] you’d see a lot of, particularly girls, quitting earlier on. Having this option I think it will help improve the longevity of the female sport in the North West, and it’s a shame when you see Grade 11 and 12 girls have to quit hockey because they have to travel too far, so it’s going to help us out a lot,” he said.

Board member and billet coordinator of the Sharks, Steph Green, who also used to manage the team, said the Sharks are an institution that prides themselves on working towards the development of its players, not only at the rink, but away from it as well.

“The Sharks are a family. [They’re] a close-knit, community-minded organization where everyone involved strives for the same outcome — to produce not only quality hockey players, but quality members of our society, with more confidence than ever, both on and off the ice,” she said.

Green added watching that development take bloom and blossom is a reward all its own.

“There is no better feeling than making a positive difference in each player’s life and providing useful tools for the next chapter in their lives,” she said.

Puck drop on the Dec. 1 game is set for 7:30 p.m.
