City urges residents to become, nominate neighbourhood Snow Angels

Picking up a shovel and clearing snow from a walkway can seem like a simple, mundane winter task.

But when helping an elderly neighbour, one with mobility issues or those off on vacation, it can help bring a community together.

The City of North Battleford and the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) committee is once again urging residents to recognize those who lend a helping hand this winter and take time to clear snow around the neighbourhood by nominating them as Snow Angels.

“Being a Snow Angel is a way to bring your neighbourhood closer and an excellent volunteer opportunity for the entire family to do together,” a news release from the City on the program said.

Each nominee receives a signed thank you certificate from the Mayor and is entered to win a $50 gift card. Nominations can be dropped off at City Hall with the name and address of the person who helped.

Snow Angels, the city said, especially in months when the sun sets early and rises late, can help create a “rich social fabric” and positive relationship among neighbours. The city said connected neighbours can remove feelings of isolation and loneliness.

“The City and CPTED understand that anyone can get a little nervous when meeting someone new. A simple “hello” and introduction is an easy way to change “strangers” into neighbours,” the release added. “A note is a quick easy way to introduce yourself if you are not aware of your neighbours hours or if you are an introvert.”
