Late attack from Bruins sees Stars fall in shootout

Nov 9, 2018 | 11:06 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 2-1 in the shootout Friday night to the Estevan Bruins.

After a scoreless first two periods that saw the Stars take the lead on the shot clock by a 10-5 margin after the first, and an 11-8 count through the second, the scoreboard remained mute in the most important category of all, with neither team able to break the goose egg.

With the two sides locked in a chess match that begun at puck drop and would carry on into the third, goaltenders, Jake Anthony of the Bruins and Joel Grzybowski of the North Stars each played determined to outlast the other as their respective teams continued to duke it out in the neutral zone and attacking zones alike, giving the other side not but an inch to make a play and crack the seal to take the lead.

Finally, in the third, one team would crack the scoreless tie, thanks to a game breaker wearing number 19 in the black and silver, much to the delight of the hometown crowd.

MacGregor Sinclair was the man to do it, busting into the offensive zone in determined fashion, before then snapping a shot passed the stunned goaltender and into the net. 1-0 Stars.

The North Stars would carry their 1-0 lead right down to the wire, until the final seconds of regulation, when, with the goalie pulled and extra attacker on, Bryce Platt would answer back for the visitors to tie the score. Platt’s goal, a tap in coming off a net mouth scramble in front with the Stars’ crease, marked the forward’s eighth of the year, and more importantly, forced overtime for his team with just 6.7 seconds remaining in the third.

Overtime was a throwback to the first two periods, with no goals to report. Que the shootout.

Shooting first for the Bruins, Michael McChesney snapped a shot short side after walking deliberately down the middle of the ice and picking his spot.

To answer, the North Stars countered with Quintin Loon-Stewardson. The younger Loon-Stewardson rushed in with speed, faking backhand, before then shifting back to the forehand for a quick shot off the blocker and wide.

After Turner Ripplinger, the Bruins’ leading scorer heading into action also scored for his team, the North Stars were up against it needing a goal on their next shot for any hope to continue on the penalty-shot relay.

Shooting second for the Stars, MacGregor Sinclair came in on goal, down the left-hand side. The forward made a slick move, but despite a nice fake in tight, was unable to sneak his five-hole bid, through the Estevan netminder, who made a great save to solidify the win for his team.

The North Stars will now look to have a short memory, as the team is back in action tomorrow night, once again at home, as they welcome the Melville Millionaires to town.

Fans of the North Stars can catch all the action, starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
