North Stars soar to victory over Red Wings

Nov 3, 2018 | 11:24 PM

The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Weyburn Red Wings 3-2 Saturday night to claim two points in the standings.

For Weyburn, the game played out almost as déjà vu, as the first matchup between the two sides, back on Sept. 28, was also a 3-2 regulation win in favour of the Stars.

The Red Wings opened the scoring on a shorthanded marker courtesy of Zac Gladu, who was the recipient of a bit of a fortuitous bounce when his shot from the high slot missed wide, stinging off the end boards and ricocheting off the back of Grzybowski’s leg into the Stars’ net.

Brett Gammer tied the game 1-1  before the end of the period, answering back with a shorthanded goal in the Stars’ favour after a nice feed from Tanner Robin.

Hustling in on the forecheck and confronting the opposition defenseman deep in the Wings’ zone, the 18-year-old, Robin, forced the turnover, stripping the defender of the puck, before then feeding it out front to a primed-and-ready Brett Gammer who then proceeded to launch a howitzer off the post and past the goalie, Riley Lamb, to pull his team even.

The second period came and went with just a single goal, coming to the delight of the Stars’ fans sprinkled in attendance among the sea of red, off the blade of Quintin Loon-Stewardson.

Tanner Robin, once again in the middle of things, won the draw back clean off an offensive-zone faceoff, laying it perfectly on a tee for the younger Loon-Stewardson to plaster home.

For Loon-Stewardson, the goal gave him his second in two games, after scoring the first of his SJHL career last game; 2-1 Stars.

With the Stars entering the third period up by one, it was the Red Wings turn to pull even, locking things up 2-2 just a minute into the final frame when Sean Olson potted his fifth of the year off a cross-seem feed tipped on the way through before being put home for good by the big centreman.

With time winding down in the third, and both sides getting desperate for a hero, one emerged wearing the black and silver of the Battlefords, with the name “Buziak” plastered on his shoulder blades.

Celebrating his fifth goal of the season in style, Buziak’s tally made it 3-2 North Stars – where the score would remain till the final buzzer, thanks in part to the stellar play of goalie Joel Grzybowski.

The veteran netminder refused to let the wild bounce early effect his psyche, bouncing back immediately after, and remaining solid for his club throughout, including making a couple of game-saving stops late to cement the victory for his team.

The North Stars will celebrate tonight before getting back to work tomorrow against the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, with pregame coverage getting underway at 4:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 4:30 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
