North Stars set to wrestle Bruins tonight

Nov 2, 2018 | 2:22 PM

The Battlefords North Stars will embark tonight on their biggest road trip of the season up to this point, kicking off three games in three nights, starting with a showdown at Affinity Place in Estevan against the Bruins.

The Bruins are the team that ended the North Stars’ playoff run last season in the SJHL semifinals, taking the series four games to one. Since then, the two sides have played each other once already this season, with the North Stars setting a commanding tone for the season series right off the bat, claiming the first decision, 6-1 on home ice back on Sept. 28.

With the shoe on the other foot this evening, and Estevan playing the home side, the North Stars will look to repeat that feat and continue their scoring expertise that saw the club defeat La Ronge in their last game 8-3, to end a mini three-game losing skid. The Estevan Bruins are also riding a high offensively, coming off a 9-4 victory over Melfort in a game that ended their own three-game slide.

The North Stars will see some big-time lineup changes tonight, both up front and on the blue line. Quite possibly the story of tonight’s game for the North Stars is the return from injury of defenseman Noah Form.

Out of the lineup since the second game of the season back on Sept. 15, Form, who earned a spot on the Stars’ top defensive pairing out of training camp alongside captain Cody Spagrud, will return to action in that very spot this evening, providing the black and silver with a huge boost in every facet of the game.

Able to move the puck with poise and precision, while contributing at both ends of the rink, Form’s hockey IQ is truly second to none. Matthew Fletcher will head up pair number two, joined once again by Seth Summers to his left. This pair has proven to be a force in the transition game.

Austin Shumanski and Adam Weiner on pair three bring a reliable and dependable presence as well, offering another viable option for the North Stars’ brass behind the bench.

Up front, MacGregor Sinclair, the North Stars’ top centreman and proverbial straw that stirs the drink on the team’s top power play unit, is expected to miss tonight’s game for the Stars. A top-10 scorer league-wide, Sinclair’s absence will undoubtedly leave a big-time hole in the lineup.

In Sinclair’s absence, Ryan Gil, a natural center who has been playing on the right side on the club’s top line, will shift over to the middle, with The California Kid remaining alongside Matthias Urbanski. Urbanski leads the North Stars in scoring entering tonight’s game, with 26 points through his first 17 games, coming off a four-point night to close out October.

Braydon Buziak, Owen Lamb and Elijah Loon-Stewardson will remain intact as a trio, providing not only veteran savvy but offensive spark as well, coming off a combined five-point night as a unit against the Ice Wolves. Forward Tanner Robin, who made good on his opportunity last game playing alongside Brett Gammer and Regan Doig on the third line, collecting a goal and an assist, will reprise his role there once again.

Dylan Esau, who saw a shift to center last game, will again be in his new-found role, flanked tonight by Quintin Loon-Stewardson to his left and Logan Spence on his right. In goal tonight, the North Stars will turn to starting netminder, Joel Grzybowski.

Grzybowski has been a rock between the pipes all season long for the North Stars, and will no doubt be looking to continue his stellar play against one of the more prolific offenses in the league in the Bruins.

Fans of the North Stars can catch all of the action on 1050 CJNB with pre-game starting at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
