Four Corner Boxing a hit in the Battlefords

With October wrapping up and November on the horizon, Four Corner Boxing in the Battlefords is gearing up for their busiest time of year.

Dylin Clarke is the owner of the local boxing club, the first of its kind in the area.

From Newfoundland originally, Clarke moved to Nova Scotia as a youngster, enrolling in boxing soon after and developing a passion for the sport early on.

After moving to the Battlefords in 2009, Clarke couldn’t help but notice the lack of boxing establishments in the area, so after graduating and getting himself situated, the former East Coaster decided to open his own boxing club in the community and begin coaching.

Since opening about three-and-a-half years ago, Four Corner Boxing Club has grown to now include between 30 and 40 members, about 10 of which box competitively.

One of the big events ahead on the schedule is the Golden Gloves competition going from Nov. 17 to 18.

“The Golden Gloves competition is one of the more prestigious events,” Clarke said. “It’s relatively new to Saskatchewan, but it’s taking place in Saskatoon [this year].”

“It’s the step before provincials basically,” Clarke added. “If you go and do well at Golden Gloves, then you know you’re going to do well at provincials.”

With as many as five members set to compete in the event this year, boxing has proven to be a burgeoning pastime for people in the community.

Also ahead on the schedule, coming up in December, is the Saskatchewan Amateur Boxing Championships, expected to feature between three and five athletes from the Battlefords representing not only their boxing club, but their community at large as well, through the pursuit of their sport and passion.

Four Corner Boxing is a non-profit organization that Clarke hopes can dispel some of the negative connotations surrounding boxing as a sport.

“We’re trying to do something good for the community,” he said. “Everybody’s always welcome at the club, and we’re just trying to bring boxing to the Battlefords and give everybody a positive experience on what it is.”

“A lot of people think of boxing and think it’s just two guys who get in the ring and slug it out, but that’s not the case at all,” Clarke continued. “It’s a well-controlled sport, a well-respected sport, and a lot of people grow from the sport as a whole.”
