JPII Crusaders rob Bandits, will host semifinals

Oct 31, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The John Paul II Crusaders are flying high, coming off a 77-6 victory over the Broadview Bandits on the weekend.

Bruce Yockey, head coach of the Crusaders, said while the offensive numbers may be what initially catches the eye, it’s the defence that also deserves a ton of credit in the win.

“We got off to a good start; our defence put us in really good field position a number of times, blocked a couple of punts, got a two-point safety, so they gave us every opportunity,” Yockey said. “We started in excellent field position all the time, took advantage of it and scored early and often.

Score early and often they did.

Up 58-6 by half-time, the lead allowed the team to spread the minutes a bit and let some of the younger players into the game as well; something that can only bode well moving forward for the future of the team.

“The lead gave us the chance to start playing some of our younger guys and give them a lot of experiences in the second half,” he said. “It was really just a good day all around.”

The game also saw the Crusaders take to the air more frequently than usual, leading to a big night for wide receiver, Thomas Swanson.

Swanson, a Grade 11 at JPII, had numerous receptions in the contest, including three catches the high school junior ran home for a touchdown.

The Crusaders will now move on to their next challenger; welcoming the Humboldt Mohawks to town Saturday for the semi-finals.

The Mohawks are coming off an undefeated season to this point, including most recently celebrating a 56-22 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds in the quarter finals.

Humboldt should prove to be the Crusaders’ greatest challenger yet, promising a heavy-weight tilt between respective division champions for the chance to move on to the finals.

Fans of the Crusaders are invited to take in the clash of the titans Saturday at Crusaders Field, with kickoff at 1 p.m.
